Wildlife Highlights from Warnham Local Nature Reserve

I had the privilege of spending a fantastic day at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, a true gem for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Even though it was a crisp winter day, the reserve was alive with activity, showcasing the vibrant wildlife that thrives here throughout the year.

During my visit, I had the chance to capture some of the incredible species that call this beautiful reserve home. Here are some of my favourite sightings from the day:

Blue Tit

A delightful splash of blue and yellow, this little beauty added a vibrant touch to the winter landscape. Blue Tits are always a joy to photograph, especially when they flit energetically between the branches.

Cormorant (In Flight)

A magnificent sight to witness, the Cormorant soared gracefully above the reserve. Its powerful wings and sleek silhouette cutting through the sky were truly captivating. Watching this bird in flight never gets old.

Goldfinch

With its striking red face and yellow wings, the Goldfinch brought a splash of colour and cheerfulness to the day. These small but vibrant birds are always a delight to observe.

Great Crested Grebe (Juvenile)

I was fortunate to spot a juvenile Great Crested Grebe as it explored its environment. Watching this young bird navigate the waters was both enchanting and inspiring.

Great Tit

Bold, charming, and always photogenic, the Great Tit never disappoints. Its confident movements make it a fun subject to capture as it perches in the trees and forages for food.

Greenfinch

A quick flash of green against the stark winter backdrop, the Greenfinch brought a burst of life to the reserve. Its bright plumage was a beautiful contrast to the bare branches around it.

Grey Heron

The Grey Heron stood tall and elegant by the water’s edge, patiently waiting for its next catch. Its statuesque presence added a sense of tranquility to the reserve.

Herring Gull (Playing Catch with a Leaf)

One of the most amusing moments of the day came when a Herring Gull began playing with a leaf, tossing it up and catching it mid-air. It was a playful reminder that wildlife has a sense of fun too!

Long-Tailed Tit

These fluffy little birds are always full of energy, and it’s hard not to smile when you see them darting from branch to branch. Their distinctive tails make them instantly recognizable.

Nuthatch

I was also fortunate to observe a Nuthatch, known for its agile, acrobatic movements as it scurried up and down tree trunks. Its ability to move in all directions is truly impressive.

Robin

Nothing says winter quite like a Robin. Its festive red breast and friendly presence made it the perfect companion for the season. These birds are a staple in the UK’s winter wildlife scene.

Tufted Duck (Male in Flight)

I was able to capture a striking shot of a male Tufted Duck in flight. The sleek, swift movement and elegant silhouette made for an impressive image as it soared across the water.

Nature: Hazelnut Tree (Catkins)

Aside from the wildlife, the nature at the reserve was equally captivating. The delicate catkins of a Hazelnut tree marked the changing seasons, reminding me that even in winter, nature is constantly evolving.

It’s always amazing to witness the abundance of life, even on a chilly winter day. Nature reserves like Warnham are a testament to the resilience and beauty of wildlife, and each visit feels like a new discovery.
