An Unforgettable Encounter at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – Spotting a Daubenton's Bat!

On the 17th of August 2024, I had the pleasure of visiting Warnham Local Nature Reserve, a place where the beauty of nature always has something new and exciting to offer. As someone who loves observing wildlife, I was thrilled by what turned out to be a remarkable day of discoveries. Among the highlights? An up-close encounter with the fascinating Daubenton's Bat (Myotis daubentonii)!

Often referred to as "water bats," Daubenton’s bats are known for their unique hunting technique. Skimming just above the surface of ponds, lakes, or rivers, they use their sharp senses to track down and snatch up insects. Watching this bat glide effortlessly over the water was a truly mesmerizing experience. I’ve always admired bats for their nocturnal elegance, but seeing one in action over the calm waters of Warnham was next level.

This species, often seen at dusk, is a master of aerial acrobatics. It was magical to witness it dart and dive in pursuit of its insect prey, showing off skills that were both graceful and functional. I managed to capture a few photos of this incredible creature—though, as any wildlife photographer will tell you, getting that perfect shot of a bat in flight is no easy feat!

As always, nature has a way of surprising us. It’s moments like these that remind me why I keep returning to places like Warnham Nature Reserve. You never know what you’ll encounter, and every visit offers something new to appreciate.

If you're a fellow nature enthusiast, I highly recommend a visit to this serene spot. Not only is it home to a rich diversity of wildlife, but the opportunity to witness such rare and magical moments makes it truly unforgettable. I can’t wait to share more from my recent adventures, but for now, here are some of my favorite shots from the day.

Until next time, keep exploring, and let nature continue to surprise you!
